“I obtained my Certificate of Massage Therapies in 2011. I attended Beth’s Fundamentals and Advanced Upper Body courses in 2013. I have had such rewarding results with MFR that it is now the main technique that I use. I will share some of my client results.
Client #1 – Severely Knarled Feet with Contracted Toes
I have had amazing success with a 26 year old man who had severely knarled feet with contracted claw like toes. He grew so fast as a teenager that it was impossible to keep up with new shoes and he now has a size 16 foot. Various experts gave up or suggested he drag his feet across the carpet to stretch them out. He didn’t persevere and nothing changed.
After two sessions of working on the toe flexors in his calves his feet started to relax. He was so surprised at how much his feet had changed. After 5 sessions the toes on one foot were lying completely flat. I am just so excited with the results. It feels so good to do something so effective.
Client #2 – Severe Burns & Scarring
I have a client in his early 30’s who was severely burned as an 18 month old bably and nearly died. He had numerous operations as he grew to “make room,” and I think in a way they were more traumatic for him than the initial accident. He has bowel issues and I was quite taken aback at how tight the fascia was over his abdomen.
He is a fit young man and a great gymnast, but as his pecs increase in size the scar tissue tightens. He is worried that as his body shape changes with age it will become more and more uncomfortable. At first he was very apprehensive but keen to try the treatment. It has been an emotional process for him because very few people have ever touched the scared areas. The scars are very tender and I think he is carrying quite a lot of baggage there as well.
To start with I just thought about making space all around the edges of his back, neck and pecs. I began by using the slightest of pressure, aware of how exhausting it would be for him. The shifting under my hands has been amazing and with each treatment he becomes more relaxed. Each session we get more movement in the tissue.
I am now able to work right over the scars and as Beth suggested, I can now work more firmly. Its funny how maybe one session feels like you are treading water and then the next session you make huge headway. (Just as an aside, Beth’s advice about seeing a client once a week for three weeks is a gem.)
This week he talked and talked about the effect the work has had on his life. He is now directing me into the tightest points. His posture is changing and he is not holding his shoulders so forward in a protective gesture now. Working with this young man has been an amazing journey and a true honour.
Client #3 – Tennis Elbow
I had a client with really bad tennis elbow and after 5 sessions she is so much better. After the 4th session she noticed a huge improvement and regained enough strength to not have to brace her sore elbow with her good arm to lift things, and the pins and needles sensation that was waking her at night stopped.
In the first couple of sessions I just concentrated on her upper back and chest because everything was so stuck. By about the third session I got to work on her arm, but she was so sore that I couldn’t move much around at all. In the 4th and 5th sessions I could feel the unravelling going on in her upper arm and wrist and she said that it all felt so much better. It has been so rewarding to see her improvements and also to feel the difference.
Client #4 – Sciatica
I have a client who is in his early 30s, overweight, injury prone and a hard working farmer. He has episodes of Sciatica type pain about every 6 months.
I started off really gently, just rocking and stretching to get him to relax. I then checked and worked on quadratus lumborum, the sacral area and the lumbar spine. The buttock was cold and twitchy. After some very gentle strokes, the tissue was sort of firing off and unravelling under my hands, moving forwards and backwards, a bit like pins and needles coming up into my hand. Eventually it all settled and I was able to sink in quite deep and just sit there until things started to dissolve.
He was still sore after the session but feeling better in the days immediately following. I look forward to our next session and seeing what lasting effect we might be able to create for him.
